Launching his new EP series ‘The Mint Experiment’ on his own label, OVN Records, Producer, musician, DJ, engineer and songwriter; J-Felix returns with his Modern Funk laden productions in a more low tempo style with Hip-Hop/Soul sensibility, taking influences from Jazz throughout.

After meeting the label bosses at Tru Thoughts through playing guitars for Alice Russell, Bristol born, now Brighton based J-Felix was quickly signed to the label and released his debut album 101 reasons receiving high praise from tastemaker, Julie Adenuga, NME, Huey Morgan and Don Letts on BBC6Music and FIP radio. The LP houses a collection of vibrant instrumental cuts inspired by 80’s funk, Boogie and RnB, interwoven with smooth vocals from himself and a variety of collaborators.

101 Reasons opened the door for J-Felix to supporting sold out live shows with established names like George Clinton (Parliament/ Funkadelic) Soul ll Soul, Hot 8 Brass Band, Roy Ayers and Incognito. J’s wide ranging appreciation of music makes him an in demand DJ too having played numerous festivals amongst Glastonbury, Soundwave, We Out Here and Nova Batida along with residencies across London and Brighton. He's also opened for Gilles Peterson on a few occasions.

From then until his following full LP, busy times were ahead for J-Felix behind the scenes and on stage, working in the studio with Swindle, Kojey Radical, Ibibio Sound Machine and Wrongtom and the Ragga Twins. J has also since appeared on music from Mahalia, Harlieghblu and disco duo Payfone on Defected Records both on guitar and bass duties and as a producer. Amongst all this, he managed to squeeze in two EPs, J Freq/ Glide on Tru Thoughts featuring Emeson and Say The Word featuring Sol Goodman and Sophie Paul on Midnight Riot which brought further support on BBC6Music, NTS, Worldwide FM and a very complimentary write up in MixMag.

Eager to create his own sonic stamp, J-Felix decided to steer away from samples in his own work, instead often layering up recordings of his own vocal and instrumental performances. Self-taught on a range of instruments including drums, guitar, bass, keys and synths, he has a pretty impressive selection of sounds to choose from at his fingertips. Proving his ability in the studio led to interest in remixes for various artists including Werkha feat Alex Rita, Amp Fiddler, The Hot 8 Brass band, Lakuta and Wrongtom and the Ragga Twins. J's remix for The Hot 8's take on Sexual Healing proved particularly popular on the festival and club scenes.

2020 saw the release of J-Felix's second full LP Whole Again Hooligan which he finished between dates playing guitars for Swindle’s 'No More Normal' tour sharing the stage with an array of guests including D Double E, Ghetts, Eva Lazarus and Knucks. J's sophomore LP saw support across the BBC on 1Extra, 6Music and Radio 1 seeing support from Jazz Supernova, Nightmares on Wax, Phil Taggart and Huey Morgan and saw a live session featuring collaborator, Andrew Ashong on Erica McKoy’s show on Worldwide FM then later a live stream for We Out Here online and a DJ set for the live festival in 2021. There was also a string of SOLD OUT launch shows across Bristol, London and Brighton, but the rest of the tour and festival dates were sadly cancelled due to lockdown which followed a week after the LP release date. You might still be able to get a copy of the vinyl on Tru Thoughts. You can also check out the full band on YouTube through the We out Here and New Generation Jazz channels. J Recently brought his 9 piece to Love Supreme Festival in 2022 and holds a regular radio show on Brighton's 1BTN Radio.

During the uncertainty of the last few years, valuable time was taken for rebuilding his studio and honing his skills on analogue equipment and synthesisers. The usual guitar, keyboard, bass, programming and drum kit performances can be expected from the new J-Felix productions with use of more string and horn arrangements. Unique soundscapes were created through recording to tape cassette, tracking through valves, experimenting with analogue equipment and using the occasional bit of found sound to layer up drums. String arrangements written with Mike Simmonds (Alice Russell/ Bonobo) and horn arrangements with sought after Brighton players, Will Gardener (Howe's 3), Jack Kendon (Howe's 3/New Generation Jazz) and Ben Edwards (Basement Jaxx/ Robbie Williams) and a broad range of collaborators makes it for an exciting and collaborative collection of music. It all starts with the first single, 'Like a Queen' featuring J-Felix's long time friend, writing partner and one half of electronic duo Anushka ; Victoria Port who appeared on his first LP under the alias SeyChelles.

The new recordings demonstrate J-Felix going back to the Hip-Hop tempo he originally fell in love with using Funk, Soul and Jazz elements he discovered through teaching himself instruments and discovering the original samples to classic Hip-Hop records. Flavours from LA and the P Funk, Jazz and Boogie sounds consistently arise throughout The Mint Experiment with J’s unique, UK, Brighton via Bristol touch which has been dubbed J-Funk by Manchester’s Jamie Groovement. Throughout Volume 1, you will hear J’s carefully curated collaborators explore the theme of ‘Anemoia’ - Nostalgia for a past you have never lived. A feeling which J-Felix often experiences when he hears of the time when Massive Attack, Tricky, Roni Size and Portishead were bubbling up in his hometown, Bristol or the UK rave scene during the 90’s and stories of notorious clubs like ‘Plastic People’ which he was too young for during the time. On Volume 1, Nottingham wordsmith, Juga Naut explores this theme particularly well on the track with the same title, after which this EP was nearly named, ‘Anemoia’. Expect further beautiful vocal performances from Chloe Bodur, Bigzy and Bessi.

The Mint Experiment gets its name from the Bristolian term for something that is great, ‘mint’ as well as the process of experimentation in writing music, production, collaborating and business by creating a new imprint and doing things independently. This is also the first time J-Felix has given vocal and instrumental collaborators more direct themes and ideas with a stronger vision than ever on the sound he wanted to create. The result is grooving, cinematic and lush with old school flavours in a contemporary setting.
